Using Cohesive Devices to Construct Written Discourse by High School Chinese DLI Learners
After learning Chinese in the immersion setting for over nine years, what level of proficiency do the learners achieve in their writing performance? This paper presents an empirical analysis of 200 written texts produced by Grades 10-12 Chinese DLI students who took the ACTFL Writing Proficiency Tests, with a specific focus on what and how well they employed Chinese cohesive devices in constructing their written discourse. The paper then discusses the implications for understanding DLI learners’ proficiency attainment, proposes some teaching ideas, and invites the audience to brainstorming together for designing effective activities that elicit discourse-level production for immersion learners.

When a school system invests in providing additional support for these students they are able to narrow or close the achievement gap between these students and their peers, give them the strategies they need to allow them to continue to grow as readers, and most importantly, ensure that they see themselves as successful readers and writers as they gain confidence, accuracy and fluency. Language FIRST: Addressing beliefs and practices that undermine the goal of bilingualism & biliteracy
Have you found yourself noticing any of these common trends that undermine the goal of bilingualism and biliteracy?

  • Our students perform well enough on academic tests in English, but their Spanish (or LOTE*) proficiency is less than stellar.
    • LOTE - Language Other Than English
  • Even the home-language speakers of Spanish tend to prefer English and often sound as if they are using Spanish words in English sentences.
  • By late primary school, our students are increasingly unable to handle the rigor of grade-level academic content in Spanish.

Join us to learn how we STOPPED undermining the goal of bilingualism and biliteracy through the Language FIRST Approach
